STORY OF A SAD SPACEMAN

The STORY OF A SAD SPACEMAN is my first one-person production film project, following a spaceman who longs to
go to Earth.①
This project started from an animation short in 2018, BREATHLESS. Usually, Sci-Fi films based in outer space require a large amount of CGI and expensive sets. So, I challenged myself to make a Sci-Fi film and build a set for my spaceman.
X is a lonely spaceman roaming around outer space, struggling to come to Earth.② However, despite all his efforts, he consistently fails to visit his home planet. During his lonely attempts, he strives to learn the way of humans by studying them in books and films he has on the ship.③-⑤
The cardboard set⑥ for this short film reflects X(spaceman)’s desire to travel to Earth. As this film is based on the spaceship launched in the 1980s, the cardboard texture gives a vintage feeling to the audience. The material itself shows how X’s dream of going to Earth is childish and unrealistic, as a kid building a cardboard castle that crumbles over in a couple of days.
This film was presented to the public at the exhibition in DEC 2019.⑦ The set was rebuilt for the audience to visit and record a message for X, the spaceman. A small computer was installed to display the website and the concept behind the film.
SYNOPSIS:
Somewhere in outer space, there is a little spaceman all alone. Our little spaceman is quite lonely and bored. He has spent so many years by himself that he is not sure what he is longing for. Yet one doesn’t have to understand something to desire it.
There are some old movies and books on his spaceship that he can learn about Earth, so you can call him an expert. You can, right? He longs to go to Earth, which he believes is his true home. Join him on his long journey of searching his way to Earth.⑧
